“I don’t believe in pets. I like animals to be wild and free’ – John Lydon
The foul and noxious odour hit my nostrils like a swift jab to the face. It only took a quarter step into my bedroom before my eyes focused immediately on the disaster sprawled all across my otherwise gleaming clear sheets. Cat poo! Not the sophisticated and well defined type of poo but rather the runny green “soak into your sheets “ type of poo.
It was then that I realised – I don’t really like pets. At first I thought this was merely because of their poor bathroom habits and their refusal to discriminate against locations. I realised there was much more to it.First you have to toilet train them and teach them where to eat but this is only the tip of the iceberg. They constantly shed their fur so much that I’m considering a second vacuum cleaner. If I had the money. After vet bills and grooming and then there is the expense of the farrier and the list goes on. Pets are high maintenance.
Instead of pets, there is something more beautiful and authentic about animals running wild in their wild habitat. I once went surfing with a school of dolphins. The way they rode along the wave next to me with their iconic smile – it was pure bliss. When they swam up next to my surfboard and allowed me to touch their bodies, it was a very unique experience. This seems so much more enjoyable than the forced indoctrination that occurs with cats and dogs to align with our notion of tolerable behaviour. Even just observing a horse run free through the paddocks and roll around playing can be calming and refreshing. Surely there is unending beauty and delight in watching animals run wild and free.
Despite my negative disposition towards pets, I must concede that they enrich our community. Guide dogs for blind people are immensely important and they have a pivotal responsibility in assisting those of our community affected by blindness. Comfort animals are of so much benefit. I recently learned of a school that has a pet goanna in its prep and year one class. This pet serves as an emotional comfort for these young students who are adjusting to daily life without the intimate presence of their mums and dad. Pets are a valuable part of our lives.
I’m still not sold on pets and I will never forget that wretched smell wafting through my hallway. Whilst poo is the last thing I want to come home to after a long day’s work, their quirky personalities and funny habits still brighten my life (sometimes).
Alternative Structure
CREATIVE start – I arrived at a cold, dark empty house. The usual stream of sunlight that breaks through the window is smothered by the grey and rumbling storm clouds coming overhead. The silence is broken by the pitter patter of my dog coming to greet me. I feel his warm soft fur in my face as he rests on me, calm and loving.
- Argument 1 – In times of despair, pets can reignite feelings of joy and comfort.
- Argument 2 – With the love that a pet brings comes great sadness when we lose them.
- Argument 3 – Pets can enhance our lives in so many ways, not just in a mental health capacity as previously recognised but also our physical health.
- E.g. Dogs for blind and the deaf
- E.g. Horses for kids with special needs
